You’ve probably heard of Colgate's Pro-Argin™
technology in toothpaste designed to treat teeth sensitivity. Here's
how this solution works on a microscopic scale.
Pro-Argin™ is a combination of three substances:
L-arginine, calcium carbonate, and fluoride. L-arginine (or simply
"arginine) is an amino acid that helps protect tissues in the
body and heal wounds. Calcium carbonate acts as a supplement to
provide the body with calcium. Flouride is a compound that is
essential to preventing cavities.
Teeth sensitivity is often caused by gum recession and
enamel erosion, both of which can lead to the exposure of the dentin,
or the layer of the tooth that covers the nerve. The dentin contains
numerous open tubules, which run from the tooth’s surface to the
nerve. Stimuli such as hot and cold temperatures from food can enter
the tubules in the exposed dentin, triggering pain. The entire
process can happen immediately after taking a bite off a cold or hot
food.
Pro-Argin™ is said to work by plugging these open
tubules and preventing the stimuli from getting through to the nerve.
However, this solution may not be appropriate for everyone, and could
be ineffective in more serious cases of enamel depletion.
Additionally, while the toothpaste brand boasts of a long lasting
effect, it does not offer a permanent solution. Your dentist can
recommend and perform more appropriate treatments after a thorough
examination of your teeth.
