With
stereotypical information and passed-on traditions, you may end up
using improper denture care methods.
Here
are some of the common denture care myths and recommended solutions:
Myth
#1:
Soaking dentures in hot water or cleaning solutions is enough.
Hot
water can cause dentures to warp, which leads to more frequent
refitting. Instead, soak the dentures in cool or mildly warm water,
or a cleansing solution prescribed by your dentist. Aside from
soaking dentures, you should also remove food debris and prevent
stains with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Myth
#2:
All commercial denture adhesives are safe.
With
over-the-counter denture adhesives, you may end up developing
sensitivity reactions or irritation. Instead of taking your chances,
consult your dentist for safe, effective products. Further, if your
dentures keep floating or popping out of place, or if you experience
any discomfort, it might be high time to have a refitting or an
upgrade to implant-supported dentures, as appropriate.
Myth
#3:
You can eat anything with implant-supported dentures.
Even
if your dentures are securely anchored with mini-implants, there
would still be limitations and cautions on food choices. However,
these disadvantages are still fewer and more manageable as opposed to
those of using conventional dentures. For instance, you should still
avoid sticky and hard foods like caramel candies, chewing gum, raw
vegetables, and nuts, but eating cooked meat and veggies, fruits, and
pasta becomes easier with these modern denture types.
